Is there a legal maximum lifting weight in the UK?
No — the Manual Handling Operations Regulations do not set a hard limit. HSE guidance gives filter figures that vary with the position of the load relative to the body, and anything above them warrants a fuller assessment. That is why Gaffer records the actual weight and the carry conditions rather than a pass/fail.
What does TILE mean?
Task, Individual, Load, Environment — the four headings HSE uses for assessing a handling operation. The fields in a Gaffer assessment map onto those four, so the record is structured the way an inspector expects to read it.
Do I need one per job or per task?
Per task. A repeated handling operation — carrying boiler units up stairs, moving slabs, loading a chipper — is assessed once and reused, and reassessed if the task or the environment changes.
Can engineers complete these on site?
Yes, on mobile and offline. The assessment syncs when signal returns, so it can be completed at the point the task is actually being planned.
