An environmental aspects register that scores significance

If you are working towards ISO 14001, or answering a PQQ that asks about environmental management, you need a register of your aspects and impacts. Gaffer scores each one by likelihood and severity, marks the significant ones, and records the legal requirements and controls that apply.

How the environmental aspects register works in Gaffer

One entry per activity and aspect, scored so the significant few stand out from the many.

Scored, not listed

Likelihood and severity produce a significance score and an explicit significant flag, so the register drives attention rather than just documenting everything equally.

Normal, abnormal, emergency

Each aspect is recorded against a condition, because a fuel store is a different environmental risk in normal operation than it is during a spill.

Legal requirements attached

The legal requirements that apply to an aspect are recorded with it, which is exactly what an ISO 14001 auditor asks to see.

What you get

The aspects register sits with your waste records, carbon footprint and compliance data in one platform.

  • Aspect reference, the activity it relates to and the aspect type
  • Aspect description and its potential environmental impact
  • Condition recorded as normal, abnormal or emergency
  • Likelihood and severity scored into a significance score
  • Explicit significant flag to focus the register
  • Legal requirements and controls already in place
  • Assessed date and next review date with overall status

Common questions about environmental aspects register

Do I need this if I am not certified to ISO 14001?

Not legally, but it is increasingly asked for. Public sector tenders, principal contractor PQQs and larger commercial clients frequently ask how you identify and control environmental impacts, and a scored register is the shortest credible answer.

What counts as an environmental aspect?

Anything about your activities that interacts with the environment — fuel and oil storage, waste generation, vehicle emissions, dust, noise, water discharge, use of hazardous substances. The impact is what results: contamination, depletion, nuisance.

Why score by likelihood and severity?

Because a register where everything is equally important is a register nobody acts on. Scoring separates the aspects that need active control from the ones that just need recording.

Does it connect to waste records?

Yes. Waste is usually one of the most significant aspects for a trade business, and Gaffer holds the waste carrier registration and transfer notes that evidence how it is controlled.
